Other Clothing Considerations Pants vs Shorts Aside from wearing all black, one other common question is the issue of pants vs shorts. Extreme Coverage When in doubt, more coverage is never a bad thing. Summary Ultimately, stage black clothing is about respecting the artists on stage as well as the fans.

They will use strobes, constant light and tools such as reflectors to craft and shape the light. A reflector is simply a surface with a reflective material that is often used to fill in darker sections of an image. Now, this is where the clothing the photographer wears comes into the picture. If you have somebody close to your subject that is wearing a white T-shirt, that T-shirt will reflect some light back onto the subject.

This may not seem like a feasible thing but in a practical sense, it does make a difference. A white T-shirt is, after all, a white reflector in the shape of a T-shirt. When light is reflected off a surface it will also pick up the colour of that surface. What I mean by that is this, if you use a gold reflector to fill in the dark areas of a portrait you will notice that the colour will have a gold tone to it, and that is because the light is picking up the colour off the reflective surface and adding a cast to that light.

The problem occurs when you start reflecting other colours such as green, blue, purple. Besides the feeling effect that the reflective surface causes there is also the effect on shiny surfaces that you often come across when shooting products.

You may have seen a light tent before which is something that is used for product photography. These tend to be a cube made of translucent white material. The idea is that you place the product inside the light tent and then you light the light tent from the outside.

This causes the light to become diffused, and because everything around the product is white the reflections look natural. The first reason is the light. When taking photos, most of the light is reflected through the photographer or videographer onto the subject, and no one wants to see their reflection in the eyes or a brilliant yellow cast from the shirt they were wearing.

Something like that could completely ruin the essence of the picture. Dark-coloured clothes prevent that from happening. They can comfortably stand in front of the subject and take loads of pictures without worrying. Another benefit of wearing black at a wedding could be in the case of an emergency for photographers. In that case, they could use their crew wearing a black shirt as a background, a sacrifice they would happily make for the perfect shot. A little side bonus, too, is that videographers and photographers work in tough conditions all day under harsh lights, and the truth is told, it can get sweaty.

Black is pretty good at hiding those stains, so they can go around wandering all day, completely carefree. For example, say someone is photographing their dog. Dark-coloured cars can cause sneaky reflections in photographs as well. To avoid appearing in the picture due to a dark car in the background, photographers wear dark colours. One of the most common events photographers are booked for is weddings. While a photographer may wear a bucket hat, jeans, and sneakers during their typical photoshoots, for a wedding, they should try to look a little more put-together and arrive wearing slacks or dress pants, black flats or dress shoes, and a button-down black shirt.

Worry no more, Wild Romantic Photography has you covered. Dressing like a professional photographer is essential for two big reasons.

First of all, when you dress like a professional, you feel like a professional. That confidence will help put your clients at ease throughout their wedding photography photoshoot, which will lead to a better experience. Many other people are looking for a wedding photographer, and they will judge you by your attire. If you are dressed like a professional, people will reach out to you with positive queries for a photoshoot.

From these catchlights I can reverse engineer the lighting setup I can see a beauty dish was used to camera left at about eye-level with the subject, angled about 15 degrees from her.

I can also see the softbox for fill was angled almost 90 degrees from her as well. Let's take a look at another, somewhat more mysterious example. For this setup, I did use a beauty dish, shown by the round reflection in both her eyes. But notice also a faint oval of white in the lower part of her eyes. This was from a round, white reflector that was being held at her elbow level.

This reflector is the trick to getting a soft skin look where shadows are filled in from light falling from the top from the beauty dish. Note that although you can clearly see the light modifiers used in these shots, you can't find me! My black garb and black camera are non reflective, so I'm hidden from view.

I'm a ghost, in a good way :. Although I've shown portrait examples here, the same rules apply to other kinds of photography.
